Kada se 1934. godine sramežljiva tamnoputa devojka Ela Ficdžerald pojavila na debitantskoj večeri i popela na pozornicu pozorišta ,,Apollo” u njujorškom Harlemu, niko nije slutio kakva se umjetnica i potencijal krije u njoj.
Sa 17 godina Ficdžeraldova je postala vokalna solistkinja orkestra ,,Chick Webb”, s kojim je snimila, između ostalih, numere ,,If you Can’t Sing It”, ,,Love and kisses” i ,,You’ll have to sing it”.
Godine 1939, nakon Vebove smrti, preuzima vođstvo nad orkestrom i snima preko 150 numera, uključujući i nezaboravnu ,,A Tisket, A Tasket”.
